Spent too much at Christmas

January 16th, 2012 at 10:57 am

I thought I had this Christmas under control but I was too spendy. I'm paying for it now that the credit card bills are coming in.
My normal budget process is on track. It's just the bigger events that put me off track: Christmas & vacations.
I need to be better and more consistent at saving for these two ahead of time. Now I just have to stop saying, I'll do it, and just start.

Lol, that's always the tough part, the doing! There are quite a few bloggers who are already saving for next Christmas, I think it's called the free Christmas Challenge? Me, I'm working on my vacation fund by saving up rebates and tracking them separate from my everyday budget. It helps me to save it separate so I won't be off-guard when it's time to pay the bill in August. Good luck!

I remember the last Christmas I hadnt saved...and the first that I did. The difference was so incredible that I NEVER went back to not saving ahead. I used the old formula of figuring out how much I wanted to spend on each person on the list, then dividing the total by the number of paychecks I got each year. The added benefit was that anytime I saw an awesome deal for a gift, I was able to snag it because I had the money set aside already. I really encourage all of my kids to try to do the same.

The recognition is the first part, and it sounds like you have the understanding for it to lead to some insurance of a different outcome next holiday season. Just don't beat yourself up over the financial realities... it can serve as motivation for the coming year! Good luck...
